In order to build a successful internet business, you need some way to store and access different lists for subscribers, potential customers, and those who have purchased your products. While you could set up several spread sheets with their names and email addresses, an autoresponder available through email marketing companies is a much better choice.
Without an autoresponder, a list of your subscribers will be a lot more tedious, time-consuming and expensive to build and to maintain. For example, if you have 500 people on your list, imagine how much time it would take to manually type and send an email to each of them.
You would manually need to enter the name and email address, type a subject line and then copy and paste your message for every single person you want to send an email to. This would take a huge amount of time which would be better spent on building your list. However, with an autoresponder, you will only need to type your subject line and message once and your autoresponder will send your message to everyone on your list at the press of a button.
But what exactly is an autoresponder? - An autoresponder is a computer program that automatically answers email sent to it and can also broadcast a single message or send a message series to a list. An autoresponder can be simple or very complex.
Autoresponders are often used as email marketing tools to immediately provide information to prospects, to keep in contact with past customers, and to help develop a relationship with potential customers. An autoresponder can be used to send out promotional messages to an opt-in list, to deliver email courses, to send out a newsletter, and even helps to build and grow an opt-in list. An autoresponder can also answer FAQs about a business and send information such as price lists or other information about a company.
So how do you pick an autoresponder service? - You will need to do some research to help you decide which email marketing company best fits your needs. However, do not under any circumstances choose a company because it offers the lowest price. And NEVER use a free autoresponder service.
In order to be successful, your subscribers must think of you as the go-to expert in your niche. How can you portray yourself as an expert if you use free services? These free services will make you look very unprofessional and it will therefore be next to impossible to build a trusting relationship with your subscribers.
If you type 'Comparison of Email Marketing Companies' in your browser's search box, you will find many sites that offer reviews as to what service is the best, However, the declared winner will change from review site to review site. There is no consistency whatsoever and rarely will any of these sites recommend the same provider as being the number one service.
Therefore, don't ever rely on a review site for your final decision before purchasing ANY product or service. While one site believes a certain product or service is the best, another review site might place that same product or service in third, fourth or even in a lower position. Instead, use these sites to get a quick over view of what each service offers.
You will need to decide what email marketing company fits your needs today as well as in the future. Choose wisely as it can be very difficult to change services. Plus, not everyone on your list will change from the old service to a new one. Which of course means you will lose a percentage of your subscribers. After working so hard to build your list, do you want to lose even one subscriber?

What Is A List of Subscribers?
Before you can start building a list, you first need to understand exactly what a list is.
A list is actually just a database of names and email addresses. Since you want to grow a TARGETED list, this database should contain the names and email addresses of people interested in your niche and what you promote to them.
So why is it important to build a targeted list? If you were promoting a product about email marketing, would you want to spend your time and money promoting that product to someone who is interested in dog training? Of course not! You want to promote only to those interested in what you are actually selling.
By targeting your list, you are looking for and finding only those people interested in your specific niche. And, if your list is targeted, it will be much easier to sell the products you are promoting than it would be to a huge list of people interested in other topics.
Some new marketers think that the bigger the list the better. They think that although John Doe is interested in dog training, he might just be interested in one of the products they are promoting. Nothing could be further from the truth. People search on the internet for the specific information they want to learn about, not a bunch of information that does not increase their knowledge.
Just remember that you are spending a lot of time, energy, and maybe money, acquiring every subscriber for your list. It is just common sense to spend all of that effort on finding only those subscribers who really interested in what you are promoting.
As your business grows and starts expanding, you will need many different lists. You will need different lists for different product campaigns as someone may opt-in to your list for Product A but not be interested in receiving emails related to Product B. You may need a different list for your newsletter, another list for any e-courses you create, and on and on.
While you may want to have a master list of all of your subscribers, you will need multiple lists depending on what messages you want to send to which subscribers. Set up multiple lists before you even begin building your subscriber base.
You can always delete a list if it doesn't function as you wish. For example, you may set up a list titled List X but then find out very few people join that list but lots join List Y. So you may want to delete List X.
However, before deleting any list think about how much it cost to get even one subscriber to join it. While you may have not spent much money (perhaps just for a domain name and hosting), you will certainly have spent time setting up the subscription form, maybe a squeeze page, ethical bribe and so on.
So before deleting a list completely, you may want to split test the wording on your squeeze page, rework your ethical bribe or even create a new one.
In order to build your subscriber list you will need to invest in an autoresponder service. These services allow you to capture the names and email address of your visitors so that you can send e-mail messages to them in the future.

Is the Money in the List? - I Say NO!
Build a list, the money is in the list. If you want to have unlimited income build a list, I have read and heard these statements numerous times.
Say I have followed this advise and I now have a list of 1,000 people. They have visited my blog or have seen a post on Facebook and decided to opt-in to receive more information. Here are four scenarios I could follow.
1) I could send emails to everyone on my list 3 or 4 times a week. In each mail I would ask how they are, tell them about my latest post which may be of interest and thank them for being a valued subscriber and wish them a wonderful day. Perhaps after a week or 10 days include an affiliate link and a mild sell tactic. No more than two of these emails per week.
2) I could send emails to everyone on my list 4 or 5 times a week. In each mail will be an affiliate link and a hard sell tactic. Since the money is in the list I will make all the money I can.
3) I could send 2 or 3 emails to everyone on my list. Include one affiliate link in each mail hoping they will buy. If they don't I will simply forget about them, delete them from my list and begin to build another list. If they do buy something, fine.
4) Email everyone on the list once. Have 2 or 3 different affiliate links in each mail- then forget about them.
In each scenario I have a list of 1,000 people. If I were to follow the advise " The money is in the list " as is the case with 2, 3, and 4, perhaps I would make money with the links and be happy. I would be happy - the people on my list would not be as happy, and would very soon unsubscribe as all they receive are emails with links to sales pages.
Think about your own inbox for a moment. How many lists are you subscribed to? Of those how many mails do you get daily with links to buy something? If you are like me, you soon grow tired of receiving these. When I see who it is from, I would simply delete it without opening. The next day I would open one scroll to bottom and click unsubscribe.
In the first scenario I am building a relationship with my subscribers. I am giving them an opportunity to get to know me, like me and begin to have trust in me, the K.L.T. factor. Once these three are established I will be in a position to make more money from my list.
I say the MONEY IS IN THE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE LIST!
The more people on your list know you, like you and trust you, the more money you are able to make from the list!
Follow the guru's saying;
"The money is in the list."
Or this saying;
"The money is in the relationship with the list."

Before converting the buyer into a regular customer who spends money with you, you must have the knowledge of how to get the visitor to subscribe to your email list in the first place. This article will show you exactly how to do that; you will learn 3 easy ways to Get Visitors to Subscribe to Your Email List.

Find a good traffic source
You have to decide on what kind of traffic source you will be using to drive quality and laser targeted visitors to your site. There are free ways to do that and there are paid ways to do it as well.
A free way can be Pinterest for instance. You sign up for a free account then "pin" (post) images that you like with a little description of the image to related "boards" (made of collections of similar images).
If you dig what a Pinterest user is pinning, you can either follow the user or only the specific board. Another thing You can do is invite other users to add pins to your boards. Traffic is generated when users click-through from the pinned image to the site (URL) attached to the image.
If you have money in your budget you can also go for paid traffic in the form of Adwords, Facebook, Bing, etc.
Offer a solution to a problem that the visitors may have
If you know your market well and are familiar with the specific problem the people in your niche are facing, you can offer them a free eBook with a solution to their problem and they will gladly give you their email address in exchange for the solution.
To keep in touch with your subscribers, if you don't already have one, you will need to get an autoresponder in order to follow-up with them.
Educate your customers in your follow-up messages
Now that you know how to get visitors to come to your site and that you have a solution to their problem in an irresistible eBook that you are offering in exchange for their email address, what are you going to do next?
Your next step, once the customer downloads the free eBook and become a subscriber, is to nurture the relationship by sending them good, solid content on a regular basis with more tips and solution to help cure their problem.
At some point in time, they will become comfortable with you and may want to know more about good products on the market. That would be a good occasion to introduce them to some paid affiliate products where you get a commission.

Try Dedicated Opt in Forms At The Bottom Of Your Posts
Today we're going to dive into another great list building technique. I encourage you to give it a try right away and get familiar with it. Then start to do more of the same in the coming days, weeks and months to continue to grow your list.
If I had to guess, I'd say you probably have an opt-in form in the sidebar of your website or blog. Hopefully you also have a dedicated opt-in page set up. But that's probably it. What if I told you there was another much more valuable piece of property on your website that's perfect for opt-in forms?
The problem with anything in your website's sidebar is that we've all gotten very blind to anything in there. It's just noise that we tune out while we focus on what we're there for - the content of your posts or webpages. It only makes sense than that an opt-in form within your content... ideally toward the end of it works. And it does.
The basic strategy is simple. You wow new readers with awesome content and instead of leaving them hanging at the end you invite them to join your list for more. It's a natural transition that works well no matter what.
If you want to, you could edit your blogging template or webpage template so the same CTA (call to action) and opt-in form appear at the end of all posts and pages. It's a quick and easy way to get a lot of exposure for your list.
The only problem with that is that you have to keep the call to action and the invitation to join your list fairly generic. What works even better is setting up a fairly minimal and plain signup form, and then writing custom invitations to join your list at the end of each post. This allows you to transition from your main content to the opt-in offer, highlighting whatever benefits and features may be of interest to someone reading each post in particular. You'll get a lot better results doing it this way.
It's also a little more work, particularly when you go back and update all old blog posts. Start using this technique going forward while also going back as time permits and adding it to those posts and pages that get a lot of traffic.
Give it a try and get a personalized invitation to join your list on a few different pages. Put up a different opt-in form for this so you can track how many new subscribers you get using this method. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised how well it works.
